A typical Bowen Technique session lasts from 15 to 45 minutes. Clients may lie on a massage table, or may be seated in a chair. A session involves one or more 'procedures', each of which consists of several sets of 'moves'.
The Bowen practitioner uses their fingers and thumbs to make small, rolling movements over the muscles, tendons, ligaments and other soft tissues at precise points of the body, while using the specific amount of pressure that is appropriate for that individual. The moves are gentle, but purposeful, and can be performed through light clothing.
The practitioner pauses between each set of moves for as many minutes as are needed for the client's body to begin to respond. The practitioner senses when the client is ready for the next set of moves through assessment of the tension level in the muscles, which indicate the nervous system's level of adjustment.
Please note: It is best to avoid any manipulative therapies for several days before and after a Bowen session lest they interfere with the body's response to Bowen therapy.
